Should You Get a Smart Sprinkler Controller? An Honest Take From Your Local Guy

Smart controllers can absolutely cut your water bill — but only if your system is in shape and the install is done right. Here's when they're worth it and when they're not.

Customers ask us about smart controllers constantly. The marketing pitch is great: connect to Wi-Fi, the controller checks the weather, your lawn waters smarter, your water bill drops 30-50%. Sometimes that's exactly what happens. Sometimes it isn't. Here's the honest take.

When a Smart Controller Is Absolutely Worth It

Your current controller is 8+ years old and losing programs after power outages

You have no rain sensor and the controller runs even when it's pouring

You travel and want to start a zone or skip a cycle from your phone

You want to actually understand what your system is doing — usage charts in the app are surprisingly useful

For any of these, the upgrade pays for itself within a year just on water savings.

When It's Not Worth It

Your current controller works fine and isn't ancient. A new smart unit is a quality-of-life upgrade, not a necessity

You don't have Wi-Fi at the controller location. Yes, you can use a Wi-Fi extender, but if your controller is in the garage and the router is on the second floor, you may have signal issues

You're never going to set it up properly. Smart scheduling needs accurate zone parameters (soil type, plant type, sun exposure, slope). If you're going to skip that step, the controller is just an expensive timer

Models We Like

Rachio 3 is the one we install most often for residential. Clean app, reliable Wi-Fi, easy schedule setup. $200-$250 hardware, $220-$320 installed depending on your zone count.

Hunter Hydrawise is the premium option. Better for properties with 12+ zones or commercial use. Local-pro favorite because the diagnostics tools are excellent. $280-$420 installed.

Rain Bird LNK Wi-Fi module — if you already have a Rain Bird ESP-Me or compatible controller, this is a $80 add-on that gives you most of the smart features without replacing the unit.

What We Tell Every Customer

A smart controller doesn't fix a broken system. If your heads are off, your coverage is uneven, or you have a leaking valve, the smartest controller in the world will still water a broken yard.

If you're going to invest in smart, get the system checked first. We do this combo all the time: tune-up + smart controller install in one visit. Usually $280-$450 depending on what the system needs.

We install all three brands above. If you want a recommendation for your specific setup, just call. We'll talk through it before scheduling anything.
