In response to ongoing drought conditions and to ensure sustainable water usage, North Richland Hills is implementing new water restrictions for 2024. These measures aim to conserve our precious water resources while maintaining the community’s well-being.
Key Restrictions and Guidelines
1. Outdoor Watering Schedule
- Odd-numbered addresses: Water on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
- Even-numbered addresses: Water on Thursdays and Sundays.
- No watering on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays.
2. Watering Hours
- Watering is only permitted before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m. to minimize evaporation and ensure more effective water use.
3. Prohibited Activities
- No watering during rain or within 48 hours after measurable rainfall.
- No watering of hard surfaces such as driveways, sidewalks, and streets.
- No operation of irrigation systems that result in excessive runoff or water waste.
4. New Plantings and Sod
- Newly installed sod and landscaping can be watered more frequently for the first 30 days after installation. However, this must be done by hand or using a drip irrigation system.
5. Swimming Pools and Recreational Water Use
- Swimming pools must be covered when not in use to prevent water loss through evaporation.
- No non-essential water use such as car washing or recreational use of water (e.g., water slides) outside the permitted watering schedule.
Enforcement and Penalties
To ensure compliance, the city will conduct regular monitoring and enforcement. Violations of the water restrictions may result in the following penalties:
- First violation: A written warning.
- Second violation: A fine of up to $200.
- Subsequent violations: Increased fines and potential restrictions on water service.
Tips for Water Conservation
- Install low-flow fixtures and appliances.
- Fix leaks promptly to prevent water waste.
- Use mulch around plants to retain soil moisture.
- Select drought-resistant plants for landscaping.
- Collect rainwater for irrigation purposes.
By adhering to these water restrictions and adopting water-saving practices, we can collectively safeguard North Richland Hills’ water supply. Let’s work together to ensure a sustainable future for our community.
